Delegates from across our international school group came together to debate real world topics as part of a 'Mini NLCS MUN' conference
From Monday, June 10th to Thursday, June 13th, 2024, NLCS (UK), our mother school, hosted an extraordinary event—the International Mini NLCS Model United Nations (MUN) Conference. This unique conference brought together Year 6 students from NLCS (UK), NLCS Jeju, NLCS Dubai, and NLCS (Singapore) for an enriching and dynamic experience.
The first day of the conference was marked by enthusiastic participation and a series of engaging activities. The delegates delved into debates following an informative opening ceremony. The day’s highlights included a treasure hunt, an MUN quiz, and a captivating session with Keynote Speaker Benjamin Roberts, a speechwriter at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA). This exciting start set a positive tone for the days to come.
The second day was equally remarkable, with delegates immersing themselves in various activities. They participated in a General Assembly, discussing and debating critical global issues. A Creative T-shirt Workshop was planned, where students would transfer designs onto t-shirts using special crayons. However, when the workshop encountered difficulties, quick thinking by the organisers led to a delightful alternative. Students received customised colouring books featuring a lovely photograph of all delegates, providing a memorable keepsake.
A surprise CRISIS situation added an element of urgency and real-world problem-solving, while English-style games on the terraces and Budge Square provided a fun and relaxing end to the day.
Day 3 was action-packed, filled with impactful debates and meaningful resolutions. Our committees tackled a range of real-world problems, demonstrating the students’ growing understanding of global issues and their ability to think critically. The day concluded on a high note with a delightful evening at the theatre, where delegates enjoyed a performance of Matilda.
The final day of the conference provided an opportunity for reflection and consolidation of the knowledge and experiences gained over the previous days. Delegates participated in concluding sessions, sharing their insights and reflecting on their journey through the world of Model United Nations.
What made this event particularly special was its ability to connect students from our family of international schools, fostering a sense of global community and collaboration. Additionally, the conference introduced Year 6 students to the world of Model United Nations, a platform usually reserved for higher years of high school. This early exposure to MUN not only broadened their horizons but also ignited a passion for understanding and addressing global issues.
The success of the International Mini NLCS MUN Conference was largely due to the expert organization by Ana Santos, the MUN Coordinator from NLCS (UK). Her dedication and expertise in orchestrating such a complex event ensured that the students had an amazing experience, filled with learning, engagement, and inspiration.
